Buying a Used Electric Car in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide

The used EV market is growing fast, and with prices stabilising there has never been a better time to buy. But used EVs need a slightly different checklist than petrol cars. Here is our step-by-step guide.

1. Set your budget. Used EVs now span every price point, from £8,000 early Leafs to nearly-new luxury models. Remember to factor in a home charger if you do not already have one.

2. Check the battery health. Ask the seller for a battery health report. Most modern EVs show battery state of health (SoH) in the car's menu. Anything above 85% is generally excellent; 75-85% is acceptable for shorter commutes.

3. Verify the charging history. Frequent rapid charging can accelerate battery degradation. Look for cars that were mostly charged at home, and ask how often the previous owner used public rapid chargers.

4. Check the warranty. Many EVs have 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranties that transfer to new owners. Confirm the remaining warranty period before you buy.

5. Take an extended test drive. An EV feels different from a petrol car. Drive on motorways, in town and on hills to check real-world range, braking regeneration and comfort.

With these checks in hand, buying a used EV is safe, sensible and increasingly the smartest way to go electric.
