UK Electric Car Sales Surge 23% in 2025 as Market Share Hits Record

The UK electric vehicle market reached another milestone in 2025, with pure electric cars accounting for 23.4% of all new car registrations — a record high. Total pure EV sales climbed to approximately 473,000 units, a 23% increase year on year.

Industry analysts point to a combination of factors: a growing choice of affordable models, improving public charging infrastructure and falling battery costs that have allowed manufacturers to cut prices.

The used EV market is also thriving, with sales up 32% in the first quarter of 2026 as battery confidence improves and prices stabilise. Many used EVs now cost less than their petrol equivalents to run on a monthly basis.

With over 70,000 public charge points now installed across the UK, the charging experience continues to improve. The government has committed to further expanding the network, particularly in rural areas.

For buyers, the message is clear: electric is no longer a compromise. It is increasingly the smart, cost-effective choice for British drivers.
