Is public charging actually getting cheaper?

I keep seeing headlines about public charging prices coming down but my local InstaVolt is still 69p/kWh. That's over 17p a mile in my Ioniq which is barely cheaper than diesel. Am I just unlucky with my local chargers or is everyone seeing the same?

It's coming down but slowly. The big networks like Ionity have dropped their rates a bit, and you get better prices through the apps or memberships. 69p is steep though - check if there's a cheaper AC charger nearby for when you're not in a rush.

My local council installed some 22kW AC chargers at 45p - not amazing but better than 69p. Also worth looking at Electroverse, their pricing is often better than the raw app price.

Public charging is still a rip-off compared to home, but if you plan around the cheaper 7-11kW options it's not too bad. The key is never charging at the expensive rapid units unless you're on a long trip.
