Is public charging actually getting cheaper?

I keep seeing headlines about public charging prices coming down but my local InstaVolt is still 69p/kWh. That's over 17p a mile in my Ioniq which is barely cheaper than diesel. Am I just unlucky with my local chargers or is everyone seeing the same?

It's coming down but slowly. The big networks like Ionity have dropped their rates a bit, and you get better prices through the apps or memberships. 69p is steep though - check if there's a cheaper AC charger nearby for when you're not in a rush.

My local council installed some 22kW AC chargers at 45p - not amazing but better than 69p. Also worth looking at Electroverse, their pricing is often better than the raw app price.

Public charging is still a rip-off compared to home, but if you plan around the cheaper 7-11kW options it's not too bad. The key is never charging at the expensive rapid units unless you're on a long trip.

Aye, Devon. Not sure about that, mate. I reckon InstaVolt is still robbing us blind at 79p a kWh! Had to top up the ID.3 on the way back from Old Trafford in the pouring rain, cost me an arm and a leg. Only time it's cheap is if I'm plugged in at home on Intelligent Octopus. Public chargers need to sort their tariffs out before I start taking the bus down the Curry Mile. City's playing better anyway, might just walk.

I reckon it's a mixed bag. To be fair, Gridserve and InstaVolt have capped some prices, but Ionity is still daylight robbery. I mostly charge at home on Intelligent Octopus since swapping my Zoe for the Cupra Born. Cycled over the Clifton Suspension Bridge yesterday for a vegan cake! Aye, I reckon it's a mixed bag, Devon. Took the Polestar 2 up the A9 for a dram in the Highlands last weekend. InstaVolt is dead handy, but 79p/kWh still stings! To be fair, I charge at home on Intelligent Octopus, so public is just for emergencies. Mind you, watching some English drivers queueing at a Gridserve in Edinburgh trying to figure out the app is priceless. Are you seeing better rates on Zap-Pay or similar, or just sticking to the big networks?
